Carol White

When in the trailer for Made, Valerie utters the line “All I ever wanted was to be happy. ”, and it could be from any number of characters embodied by White from Never Let Go onwards. And yet, Made is possibly the most depressing and most affecting of all her films (its key plot points I will not reveal, because that would truly ruin viewers’ experience of the film’s absolutely crushing ending). Loach called Poor Cow “an impressionistic film”, which again leant heavily on improvisation to express the story inside a fragmented and episodic narrative. In an interview about the making of it, he described White as talented, terrific and the obvious choice for the lead part.

ChronologyRelatedThe Wednesday PlayCathy Come Home is a 1966 BBC television play about homelessness. It was written by Jeremy Sandford, produced by Tony Garnett and directed by Ken Loach. A 1998 Radio Times readers' poll voted it the "best single television drama" and a 2000 industry poll rated it as the second-best British television programme ever made. Filmed in a gritty, realistic drama documentary style, it was first broadcast on 16 November 1966 on BBC1. The play was shown in the BBC's The Wednesday Play anthology strand, which often tackled social issues. In a career that spanned over forty years Carol became a star on British Television in 1965 with her portrayal of a pregnant mother in a grim story called "Cathy Come Home" and "Poor Cow".

In 2011 the play was re-released on DVD by 2 Entertain with audio commentary by Loach. Along with other Loach films, it is available to watch on Loach's YouTube channel. It is also available as a special feature on the 2011 Criterion Blu-ray and DVD release of Kes, another Ken Loach film. By coincidence, another charity for the homeless, Shelter, was launched a few days after the first broadcast.

Many brilliant plays were filmed for this series, including some early Dennis Potter, and that other influential polemical masterpiece "The War Game" - which the BBC refused to show in a cowardly acquiescence to Government pressure. "Cathy" shares with "The War Game" a quasi-documentary style, without commentary, which provides much of its realism. However the performance of the two leading players in "Cathy" is also perfect.

They move in with Reg's mother, until tensions develop between her and Cathy in the crowded flat. A kind elderly landlady, Mrs. Alley, rents to them for a while, during which time Cathy has another son, Stevie. Mrs. Alley even allows them to stay when they fall behind on the rent. However, she dies suddenly and an agent of her nephew and heir appears at the door demanding all the back rent, which they are unable to pay.

She made a briefly triumphant move to the West End stage in the early 1980s in a production of Nell Dunn’s play Steaming. After initial rave reviews, White was asked to leave allegedly over erratic attendance and timekeeping. This coincided with the release of a candid ghost-written autobiography, Cathy Comes Home, and her tabloid kiss-and-tell of a life of affairs.

They go to a railway station, where Cathy's children are taken away from her by social services. As Cathy Come Home was being filmed around Battersea, Bruce Kenrick and Des Wilson were founding Shelter, the charity that still exists today in assisting the homeless or people trying to avoid being homeless. Cathy Come Home helped establish Shelter's profile, and contrary to belief, Shelter was not created after Cathy Come Home; it was already established.

The way that Carol White acted female vulnerability during her purple patch of films in the 1960s became something of a blueprint for British cinema going forward. And the dangers inherent in that vulnerability were explored even more explicitly in her next picture after Cathy Come Home; Poor Cow. The sons of actress Carol White, who starred 30 years ago with their mother in Ken Loach's Cathy Come Home, have joined calls for the video of the BBC's groundbreaking television film to be released. The play tells the story of a young couple, Cathy and Reg , and their descent into poverty and homelessness. At the start of the film, Cathy leaves her parents' overcrowded rural home and hitchhikes to the city, where she finds work and meets Reg, a well-paid lorry driver. They fall in love, marry and rent a modern flat in a building that does not allow children. Cathy soon becomes pregnant and must stop working, and Reg is injured on the job and becomes unemployed. The loss of income and birth of baby Sean force them to leave their flat, and they are unable to find another affordable place to live that permits children.
